HOW DO WE TREAT INSOMNIA?
How we treat insomnia will largely depend on the type of insomnia that you have. There are three main types of insomnia.
1) Primary insomnia: this is when you have trouble getting to sleep. It is often the result of an excessively busy mind and an inability to switch off. Anxiety tends to amplify this inability to get to sleep with people regurgitating the concerns of the day, or worrying about tomorrow. This condition also reflects a lack of compartmentalisation skills, and will be much worse if you leaned towards being more sensitive or a “worrier”.
2) Middle insomnia: this is where you can get to sleep but you wake up in the middle of the night and have trouble getting back to sleep. This condition is often exacerbated when people use alcohol to facilitate sleep.
3) Terminal insomnia: this is when you can get to sleep but you invariably wake up much earlier than you need to and you cannot get back to sleep.
Our approach will differ depending on which form of insomnia is the primary concern to you. As each person is treated individually, the therapist will devise your treatment plan with you.
